How to calculate stainless steel pipe weight based on dimensions and charts?

30-09-2023

Stainless steel pipe unit weight (kg/m or lb/ft) is an important specification that should be specified in the purchase order.

So how do you calculate the weight per foot or meter of stainless steel pipe?

1. Calculation based on dimensions and formulas

Obtain dimensional information: First, you need to know the outer diameter (d, unit: mm), wall thickness (t, unit: mm) and length (L, unit: m) of the stainless steel pipe.

Select calculation formula:

General formula: Weight of stainless steel pipe = 0.25 × π × (outer diameter square - inner diameter square) × L × specific gravity of steel (where π is 3.14, and the specific gravity of steel is generally 7.85g/cm³). Since inner diameter = outer diameter - 2 × wall thickness, the formula can be simplified to: weight of stainless steel pipe = 0.25 × 3.14 × [(d - 2t) × d] × L × 7.85 / 1000 (unit converted to kg).

Simplified formula (commonly used in calculations): stainless steel pipe weight (kg/m) = (d - 2t) × t × 0.02466. This formula directly gives the weight of stainless steel pipe per meter for quick calculation. If you want to calculate the weight of the entire stainless steel pipe, just multiply the result by the length L (m) of the stainless steel pipe.

Calculation: Substitute the known d, t, and L values into the formula and calculate.

2. Search according to the chart

If you have a stainless steel pipe size and weight comparison table (also called a chart) at hand, you can get the weight of the stainless steel pipe directly by looking it up.

Determine the specifications of the stainless steel pipe: First, determine the specifications of the stainless steel pipe based on the outer diameter, wall thickness and other information of the stainless steel pipe.

Find the chart: In the stainless steel pipe size and weight comparison table, find the corresponding weight per meter or total weight (if the length is given in the table) according to the specifications of the stainless steel pipe (such as outer diameter, wall thickness).

Get weight information: Read or calculate the required stainless steel pipe weight directly from the chart.

Things to note

During the calculation process, ensure the consistency of all dimensional units to avoid unit conversion errors.

If a formula is used for calculation, the correctness and applicability of the formula should be ensured.

For stainless steel pipes with special specifications, if it cannot be calculated directly through formulas or charts, you may need to refer to relevant standards or consult professionals.

In practical applications, you can also consider using stainless steel pipe weight calculation software or online tools to assist calculations to improve efficiency and accuracy.
